Remembering Swami Vivekananda ji on His Mahasamadhi Day

AVS

During a sea voyage, some foreign missionaries repeatedly insulted Hindu Dharma. Swami Vivekananda first responded with patience, dignity, and reason. However, when the insults continued despite his warnings, Vivekananda reportedly stood up, caught one of the men by the collar, and firmly said:

“If you insult my religion once more, I will throw you into the sea.”

The missionaries were stunned and they did not speak disrespectfully about Hindu Dharma again for the rest of the voyage.

Later, Swami Vivekananda explained the spirit behind his response by asking, “If someone insults your mother, what will you do?” He reminded us that just as we would never tolerate the insult of our mother, we should never remain indifferent when our Dharma is deliberately insulted. True spirituality is not weakness—it is strength guided by wisdom, compassion, and self-restraint.

On the sacred occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s Mahasamadhi Day, let us bow with gratitude to this great son of Bharat, who dedicated every breath of his life to the service of Sanatana Dharma, Bharat, and humanity. His life continues to inspire us to be fearless, self-confident, rooted in our eternal values, and committed to protecting Dharma through knowledge, character, and righteous action.

May we strive to live by his timeless message: “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.”

Jai Sanatana Dharma.
